What it is

A shot in the arm for your project

Needle in the Hay is an annual competition and event run by Happy Mag, built to champion emerging bands and musicians at the point in their careers where it counts most. The prize pool is curated rather than cash: vinyl, recording gear and software that actually moves a project forward.

Step 01

Send a single

New or old, released or unreleased, demo or finished master. If you believe in it, enter it.

Step 02

The panel listens

Every finalist is heard by all nine judges. Real people in real rooms, not an algorithm.

Step 03

The result

Finalists are announced, and the grand prize winner's single goes to Zenith Records to be cut.

The 2026 panel

Nine people who will actually hear your song

Not a mailing list. Not a shortlist someone skims. Every finalist goes in front of all nine.

Yes. Previous physical releases or appearances elsewhere do not affect your eligibility.
Can I submit a demo?
Yes. Demos are welcome. We are listening for the song, not the budget.

Yes. You are welcome to enter multiple singles.
Will my music stay private?
Yes. All entries are kept completely private.

Somebody wins this every year

Nine judges, a pressing plant, and a grand prize we are still unwrapping. It may as well be your single.
